The main exporters are located in Brazil and Asia. In the Mediterranean area, 3% of the global total is produced. Mango consumption in Europe has been increasing in recent years. In 2021 it was estimated that 1.61kg\/capita was consumed in Spain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Spain the mango was introduced in the Canary Islands at the end of the 18th century. The beginning of commercial cultivation in the Canary Islands began in the 70s and in the Southeast of the Peninsula in the early 80s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The experiences presented here all belong to the Axarquia region, which has a subtropical climate. Thus, the mango is in a climate that is conducive to it. However, the lack of water due to <span  class=\" OP\" onclick=\"ljo_open('https:\/\/ws142.juntadeandalucia.es\/agriculturaypesca\/observatorio\/servlet\/FrontController?action=RecordContent&amp;table=11113&amp;element=4674854&amp;subsector=34&amp;', '');\">prolonged droughts<\/span> makes it necessary to rethink how this tree, like many others, is irrigated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To these difficulties, the expansion of this type of crop and its water demand require opting for solutions to improve the management and efficiency of mango irrigation. From <span  class=\" OP\" onclick=\"ljo_open('https:\/\/deepdrop.es\/en\/', '');\">DeepDrop\u00ae System<\/span> we propose a localized and subway irrigation system that in addition to achieving great water savings, achieves soils with an adequate PH and a humidity that is preserved underground. The 4 experiences presented will show you how our customers have experienced the introduction of DeepDrop\u00ae on their farms and what the results have been.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1755017796\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1046960071\" class=\"col small-12 large-12\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rancho_Oriental_Farm\"><\/span><strong>Rancho Oriental Farm<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Dieter Van Saet<\/strong> is a Belgian engineer, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rancho-oriental.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rancho Oriental<\/a>, a 40-year-old farm where he has now planted mangoes and avocados. These are located in the municipalities of Trapiches and Benamargosa (Malaga).<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1671377083\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-372390256\" class=\"col medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It has slate type soils which means that it drains a lot of water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He learned about the DeepDrop\u00ae irrigation system through social media, searching for systems that save as much water as possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last year they planted 2,000 new trees using DeepDrop\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first year they placed one device per tree and the second year another one. The variety of mangoes introduced was the red Palmer mango and the Keitt mango. In this case, since they were new plantations, they were not able to observe the water savings. This movement does not occur with DeepDrop\u00ae because the tube is pinned and, therefore, precisely located so that the water reaches the roots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, Mr. Van Saet considers it very profitable to invest in the DeepDrop\u00ae installation and would recommend it for the water saving of any crop.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1835640738\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1855157943\" class=\"col small-12 large-12\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Private_greenhouse_farm\"><\/span><strong>Private greenhouse farm<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ignacio Hidalgo <\/strong>from Torrox (Malaga) has shared with us his experience of growing mangoes in a greenhouse in a clay soil<strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the beginning of his plantation he opted for the DeepDrop\u00ae irrigation system. During the first year he used a 4 liter\/hour device, and in the second year he implemented two 4 liter\/hour drippers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Watering, obviously, varies according to the season:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>In winter, water 10 minutes a day, using 9 liters per week.<\/li>\n<li>In spring and autumn water 20 minutes a day, which means a consumption of 18 liters per week.<\/li>\n<li>In summer water 30 minutes a day, which means 28 liters a week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If we compare this data with surface irrigation, which requires between 70 and 150 liters per week, we can see that DeepDrop\u00ae guarantees a more efficient use of water by optimizing its distribution and reducing waste.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row other mango farms he has observed obvious differences when they were not using DeepDrop\u00ae compared to his farm:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Moisture problems: either the soil looked too dry or too wet, even waterlogged.<\/li>\n<li>Ignacio has had no problems with weed growth, while on other farms he has seen the work involved in both removing and managing weeds.<\/li>\n<li>On these farms they also have no real control over the water the tree receives whereas with DeepDrop\u00ae it is easy to do so because all the water goes directly to the root system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks to simple sensors, Ignacio was able to verify that both the PH and the humidity of the soil with DeepDrop\u00ae were in perfect conditions for the growth of his mangoes.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1653516172\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1907205009\" class=\"col small-12 large-12\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Aitor_Perezs_farm\"><\/span><strong>Aitor Perez&#8217;s farm<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aitor Perez, originally from Bilbao but who has been living in the Axarquia for more than twenty years, started working on his own farm in Benamargosa (Malaga) ten years ago. In it he has 1.25 hectares, with a slate soil in which he has as main crop 920 mangoes and also 350 prickly pears, 200 vines and 40 fruit trees of different species. The varieties of mango grown are Kent and Tommy Atkins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before, I used to use a surface drip irrigation system with 2 self-compensating drippers of 8 liters\/hour, which I watered 1 hour every 3 days if it was not too hot (above 32 degrees Celsius).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He now waters, as long as the spring has been rainy and the soil is well moistened during the summer, with a dripper per tree of 8 liters\/h, 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening with the same frequency, that is to say every 3 days, every two days during periods of high temperatures. Thus, Aitor has gone from watering 32 liters per week to 4.8 liters per week. In other words, he has saved 83% of his weekly water consumption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, if the spring had been drier, then irrigation is increased to 15 min in the morning, and 15 min in the evening, saving 75% over the previous irrigation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With this, Aitor obtains good harvests and makes the farm profitable and productive since he consumes less water and can save the water he used to use, as well as the rainwater for the summer months when water is scarce. This water is stored in a small water tank with a capacity of 32,000 liters and a 450,000 liter reservoir.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aitor also points out that the system, by reducing irrigation times, as he pumps water from a well, has also allowed him to save energy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aitor learned about the DeepDrop\u00ae irrigation system when he was looking for water saving alternatives for his farm and on the internet he found &#8220;DeepDrop\u00ae&#8221;.<span  class=\" OP\" onclick=\"ljo_open('https:\/\/deepdrop.es\/entrevista-al-sr-rico-inventor-del-sistema-de-riego-subterraneo-deepdrop\/', '');\">The Interview with Mr. Rico, inventor of the DeepDrop\u00ae subway irrigation system <\/span>&#8220;and from there he went to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCWpTatrCBUrlsfRKKlioVJw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youtube<\/a> channel. When he noticed how it worked and saw that it was also near his farm, he didn&#8217;t think twice and went to buy a few devices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What caught Aitor&#8217;s attention? DeepDrop\u00ae has a self-compensating dripper inside a capsule with a hose that brings water from a hose, so there is no loss due to evaporation. In addition, by means of the capsule and the dripper you can also mechanically control the amount of water you use and, in turn, check that the water effectively reaches the roots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In turn, the capsule indicates the level of humidity that it has underground and this is done by the same tube through which the water passes to the root system. As the moisture evaporates from below ground through this hole, it condenses the droplets in the capsule until it falls again in the form of a drop through the same channel, that is, through the tube that carries the water to the root system.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-647222030\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-199687031\" class=\"col small-12 large-12\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eduardo_de_Chilches_Farm_Malaga\"><\/span><strong>Eduardo de Chilches Farm (Malaga)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eduardo has a farm with approximately 442 Osteen and Kent mangoes. It has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caae.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CAAE<\/a> certification, official certification of organic products. The mangoes are in an extension of 2 hectares in a loam soil. The mangoes are of the Osteen, Kent and Keitt varieties.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1413852174\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-612027815\" class=\"col medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the area has been suffering the ravages of drought for years, they looked for water-saving systems and learned about DeepDrop\u00ae through an article in a newspaper and because an acquaintance told them about this localized subway irrigation system. About two years ago, they installed two 4 liter\/hour drippers per tree. Since they have incorporated it, he normally waters every 45 &#8211; 50 minutes every 3 or 4 days, but in high temperature seasons he waters 40 minutes every two days. This change of irrigation system has meant a saving of 80% of water compared to what he used to irrigate before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked how he keeps his soils healthy on his organic farm, he tells us that he does so by applying organic agricultural soap and mycorrhizae, as well as exfoliating algae. In addition, he keeps the mulch of fallen leaves from his own trees and weeds in his field to maintain the moisture of his soils. It is important to note that this farm is located in an area exposed to very high temperatures in summer. The management of an organic production farm has also been included. The benefits that DeepDrop\u00ae brings not only to the mangoes but also to the humidity that it generates in the soil and that allows irrigation with up to 83% less water compared to previous irrigations were also presented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/app\/MaterialVegetal\/fichaMaterialVegetal.aspx?idFicha=2350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canary Islands and Andalusia<\/a> are the regions where the commercial cultivation of mangoes has been implemented due to their climatic conditions. But now the challenge is to improve irrigation efficiency by drastically reducing water consumption if we want to maintain this type of agriculture where water resources have been scarce for a long time. These experiences show that there is a simple way to do this that not only does not require large infrastructures, but can also take advantage of those already in use for self-compensating surface drippers. It is also worth remembering that in the event that a part of the DeepDrop\u00ae irrigation system breaks down, it is not necessary to replace the whole system, but simply order a replacement of the specific part. DeepDrop\u00ae complies with the characteristics of eco-design and is <span  class=\" OP\" onclick=\"ljo_open('https:\/\/deepdrop.es\/en\/an-irrigation-system-specific-to-the-circular-bioeconomy\/?srsltid=AfmBOorBMDj97RrlNDjIDbw8RWw5MMjP1XZF3OEJQ-ibMDHO-7G3PO-Z', '');\">typical of the circular bioeconomy<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, it should be noted that the tendency of many consumers to demand organic products is also considered for mango cultivation.
